The status of Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him) in the heart of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him).

Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him) had a very special place in the heart of his brother Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) and no other person has.

On the ninth of Muharram, when Omar Ibn Sa'd has called: "O horses of Allah ride and with paradise be delighted." People rode their horses and went to attack Imam Al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) and his companions, while Imam Al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) was sitting in front of his tent, leaning on his sword, once he has seen them he stood up and said: "O Abbas, mount your horse -may I be your redemption O brother- and go to meet them and tell them: What do you have and what do you want? Al-Abbas (peace be upon him) went and asked them and they replied: We received the order of the commander to fight you or to take from you the oath of allegiance. Al-Abbas (peace be upon him) went back to inform Al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) with what they have said. Imam Al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) then asked them to give him this night for worship and prayer, so the next day they can fight.

So the Imam (peace be upon him) said to al-Abbas (peace be upon him): "May I be your redemption" And this shows the greatness of Aba al-Fadl in the heart of the Imam (peace be upon him).

Also, when al-Abbas noticed the loneliness of his brother and the martyrdom of his companions and household on Ashura, he advanced towards his brother and asked for permission to fight. The Imam did not permit him and he said with sad tone, “You are my standard-bearer…”

Imam Al-Hussayn (peace be upon him), in fact, felt security and protection as long as Al-Abbas (peace be upon him) was with him. But Al-Abbas insisted on the permission and said, “I can no longer stand it. I want to take avenge upon those hypocrites.”

As the Imam had nothing to do other than permitting his brother to fight against the enemies, he asked him first to try to get water for the harem and children who were gravely thirsty. And al-Abbas (peace be upon him) did what the Imam ordered him. And when he fell to the ground on the last moment before his martyrdom he shouted, “Peace be upon you, Aba-Abdullah!”

As the Imam heard these words of farewell, he hurried toward the River al-Alqami where Al-Abbas fell. He pushed himself through the troops of the enemies and threw himself on the body of his brother. Expressing the grave misfortune that he suffered by the martyrdom of his brother, Imam Al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) wailed, “My back is now broken and I have lost everything and my enemies are rejoicing at my misfortune.”

It was surely grave misfortune for Imam Al-Hussayn and the Prophet’s harem whose cries and moaning for their guardian and protector filled that place. The Imam (peace be upon him) also participated with them in weeping as he cried:

“We have surely lost everything as we lost you, O Abu Al-Fadl Al-Abbas.”

All of this is showing us how Aba Abdillah al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) felt towards his brother Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him).
