The Green Belt project is considered one of the important projects in the holy city of Karbala, as it works to improve the environment of the province and eliminate the phenomenon of desertification, and works as a buffer and a natural barrier between the residential neighborhoods and the surrounding desert areas, but the previous years were harsh on the project because of lack of interest in it by the concerned authorities, so it was neglected and began to die.
The al-Abbas's (p) holy shrine and as part of its programs, activities and events in support of the governorate and its residents, made the servants of the shrine of Aba Al-Fadl Al-Abbas (peace be upon him) harnessed their efforts to save the southern part of the project, which is 27 kilometers in length and an area of 270,000 square meters, and work on spreading the spirit in it and rehabilitating it, and these works were sponsored by the al-Kafeel Nurseries Group and the Engineering Maintenance Department.
Professor Rafid Ayad, one of the supervisors of the implementation of the project, said: "The project went through several stages for its rehabilitation, the most important of which are:
- Conduct a site survey of the project and assess the damage.
- Carry out comprehensive cleaning work.
- Replace damaged trees with another.
- Rehabilitation of the irrigation system.
- Providing the project with 48 water sprinkler and irrigation systems.
- Rehabilitation of artesian watering wells and repairing water pumps.
- Repairing the electrical systems feeding the project. "
He explained: "The southern green belt contains types of trees that are distinguished for their resistance to difficult desert climatic conditions, including Eucalyptus, olives and palm trees."
As for the engineer, Munther Abbas, from the Engineering Maintenance Department, he added: “The department also provided many things for the maintenance of any breakdown that occurs in this project, including the maintenance and follow-up of sprinklers, plunger and the water well if they are demolished, as well as mechanical and electrical work, in addition to the maintenance work that is divided into two parts: the periodic section from examining and following up the work of the well and electricity system, and the emergency department when some of the project's joints are exposed to problems, whether in the well or others, as the department is used to repair it. "
