In a humanitarian scene that embodies the deep fraternal bonds between Muslim peoples, and amidst exceptional circumstances imposed by the recent events in the region, the first convoy from the Al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine set off to the Islamic Republic of Iran to deliver food and medical aid collected as part of the response campaign to the call of the supreme religious authority to assist the Iranian and Lebanese peoples under these conditions.
The convoy included 38 trucks loaded with 690 tons of humanitarian aid, including 670 tons of essential food supplies, along with 20 tons of necessary medical supplies.
In a special interview, the head of the Relief Committee at the Holy Shrine and the delegation of the aid convoy, Mr. Mohammad Al-Ashigar, revealed to the news center of the Media Department at the Holy Shrine the details of the trip, its reception by the locals, the mechanisms for distributing the aid, as well as the future plans for continuing support. Below is the text of the interview:
- After the convoy's arrival in Iran, what is the coordination mechanism for distribution and ensuring that the aid reaches its rightful recipients?
- Direct coordination was conducted with the office of the representative of the supreme religious authority in Qom, His Eminence Sayed Jawad al-Shahristani, alongside cooperation with the Iranian Red Crescent. The in-kind aid, which included foodstuffs, medicines, and medical supplies, was handed over to the Iranian Red Crescent, as it is the specialized body that possesses accurate databases about the affected individuals, ensuring its distribution in a fair and organized manner. As for the cash donations from the Iraqi people, they were delivered directly to the injured through field visits to hospitals, in addition to providing support to the families of the martyrs in their homes, in a step aimed at enhancing the humanitarian aspect and direct communication with the affected individuals.
-Did the convoy face field challenges?
-Delivering aid faced significant difficulties due to the long distances and complex security conditions in Iranian territories. However, the efforts of the staff of the Al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine, in cooperation with the office of the Supreme Religious Authority in Qom, the Iranian Red Crescent, volunteers, and supporters, contributed to overcoming these challenges.
- Are there plans to develop the upcoming humanitarian convoys?
The first convoy focused on providing basic needs, while the transfer of additional needs is currently being studied and assessed in coordination with the Office of the Supreme Religious Authority in Qom, and the Iranian Red Crescent, in preparation for meeting them in future convoys. The first experience will serve as a foundation for improving performance in the future, by overcoming obstacles and enhancing the efficiency of humanitarian work, ensuring the continuation of these humanitarian initiatives.
-How did the Iranian people receive the convoy of the Al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine?
The caravan received a grand reception from the moment it entered Iranian territory until it reached the holy city of Qom. The locals gathered along the road, welcoming and expressing their deep gratitude to the Iraqi people. The moral impact of the aid surpassed its material value. The flag of the shrine of Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him), carried by the delegation, added a special spiritual dimension, as citizens flocked to be blessed by it, given the great significance this figure holds in the hearts of the Iranian people.
The Al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine had launched its humanitarian campaign to support the Iranian and Lebanese peoples in response to the call of the supreme religious authority to extend a helping hand and assistance to the affected.
This campaign comes as an extension of a series of humanitarian initiatives launched by the holy shrine during previous crises, including support for the Syrian people during the 2023 earthquake, as well as assistance to the residents of Gaza and Lebanese displaced persons in 2024.
