Lady Fatima Az-Zahra (peace be upon her) did not live long after the martyrdom of her father (Allah's prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household), she was continuously grieved and weeping over her calamities, pains and misfortunes. Lady Fatima Az-Zahra (peace be upon her) was ready to meet her Lord, she lay down in her garment in the middle of the house and in the direction of Qiblah. It is said that she has sent her two daughters Zaynab and Umm Kulthum to the house of one of the women of Bani Hashem so they do not see the death of their mother, out of pity and compassion.
Imam Ali, Al-Hassan and Al-Hussayn (peace be upon them) were out of the house at that time, and maybe because of compelling reasons.
It is narrated from Asma' that when Lady Fatima Az-Zahra (peace be upon her) felt death close, she told Asma': "When it was time for meeting His Lord, Gabriel brought some camphor of paradise to the Prophet, who divided it to three parts, one third for himself, one third for Ali and one third for me, and it was forty dirhams." Then she said: "O Asma'! Bring me the rest of the embalmment of my father from such place and put it under my head." which I did. Then Asma' continued: When she performed her ablution for prayer, she said: "Bring me the perfume that I wear, along with my prayer's clothes." And then she said: "Wait for me awhile, and then call me, it is either I answer you or not, if not then know that I join my father, and then inform Ali."
When it was the moribundity time, Lady Fatima (peace be upon her) sharply looked and said: "Peace be upon Gabriel! Peace be upon the Messenger of Allah! O God with your messenger! O God within your satisfaction, at Your vicinity and Your House; the House of peace." Then said: "This is the procession of the heavens' people, this is Gabriel and this is the Messenger of Allah saying: O beloved daughter come, only good is in front of you!" Then she opened her eyes and said: "And upon you the peace O taker of the souls, hurry and do not torment me!" and then: "To You my Lord not to Fire!" Then she closed her eyes and stretched her arms and legs.
Asma' then called her and received no answer, she came closer to her and found her dead, she fell on her kissing her and telling her: O Fatima, when you meet your father the Messenger of Allah, convey to him to greetings of Asma' bint 'Umays. At that point, Imam Al-Hassan and Imam Al-Hussayn (peace be upon both of them) entered and saw their mother laying down, so they asked Asma' bint 'Umays: "Our Mother did not used to sleep at this time of the day!" Asma' bint 'Umays replied: "O sons of the Messenger of Allah! Your mother is not sleeping, she has passed away!"
When Imam Al-Hassan (peace be upon him) heard such words, he fell on the body of his mother and kissed her face and addressed her: "Dear mother! Please talk to me before I pass away." Imam Al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) came near and kissed her mother's feet and said: "Dear mother! I am your son Al-Hussayn, talk to me before I pass away."
Then Asma' told them: O sons of the Messenger of Allah, set off to your father Ali and inform him about the death of your mother. They went out and once they have reached near the mosque they raised their voices crying, a group of companions gathered around them asking them why they were crying, they answered: Our mother Fatima (peace be upon her) has died! Imam Ali (peace be upon him) fell down on his face saying: "From whom is the consolation, O daughter of Mohammad!"
