Important: Fatwa of the Supreme Religious Authority Office on the Ashura condolence rituals.

On Thursday (9 Dhu al-Hijjah 1441 AH) corresponding to (30 July 2020), the Office of the Supreme Religious Authority issued a fatwa as a reply to a question about the condolences rituals of Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him) in the month of Muharram in 1442 AH.

The following is the text of what was posted on the website of His Eminence the Supreme Religious Authority; Sayed al-Sistani:

“In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

His Eminence the supreme religious authority, Sayed al-Sistani

Peace, mercy and blessings of God

And after:

With the approaching of the Sacred month of Muharram and the renewal of the at-Taff tragedy, and the continuation of the Corona epidemic and the stress of the concerned authorities on the necessity of avoiding the establishment of large gatherings, especially in closed places, many believers ask what they should do regarding the condolences rituals of the master of martyrs; Imam al-Hussain (prayers of God be upon him) and his family and supporters (peace be upon them), with their urgent desire to continue the usual rituals?

Please explain. Thank you very much.

A group of believers - Najaf"

"In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Peace mercy and blessings of God be upon Al-Hussein, the children of Al-Hussein, the companions of Al-Hussein.

There are many methods that can be used to express sadness and sorrow on this sad occasion, and to show sympathy with the Holy Prophet (may Allah prays upon him and his family) and the Ahl al-Bayt in that great calamity that befell Islam and Muslims. It includes:

1- Increasing the broadcasting of the beneficial Husseini councils live on TV channels and Internet applications. And religious and cultural centers and institutions should coordinate with the good preachers and Radoods who are good in this regard, and mobilize and urge the believers to listen to them and interact with them while they are in their places of residence or so.

2- Holding the home councils at certain times of the night or day, in which attendance is restricted to family members and those who are in contact with them, and during which some useful Husseini councils are heard, even through what is broadcast live on some satellite channels or via Internet applications. As for the public councils, the health controls must be strictly observed, in which the social separation between those present and the use of medical gags and other means of protection against the spread of the Corona epidemic should be observed, with limiting the number of attendees to what the concerned authorities allow, which is different according to where they are held in open or closed places, and in terms of the difference in countries, given the extent of the epidemic in each of them.

3- Spreading Ashura appearances on a large scale by raising black flags and banners in the squares, streets, alleys, and so on from public places, taking into account not to violate the sanctity of private property or others, and not to fail to care for the laws in force in the country. It should include passages from the words of Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) in his great reformist uprising, and what was said about the at-Taff tragedy from masterpieces of poetry and prose. As for the foods that are known to be distributed on this occasion, the health conditions necessary for their preparation and distribution must be taken into account, even if this requires limitation to some dry foods and their delivery to the homes of the believers in order to avoid congestion upon distribution.

May God grant success to everyone to revive this important occasion and held condolences rituals of the master of the youth of the people of Paradise (may God’s prayers and peace be upon him), as the present circumstances allow, He is The Guardian of Success.
