The cadres working on the Sidr [Ziziphus] Model Farm project were able in a short period to promote this important multi-purpose agricultural project, by introducing new varieties of Sidr, especially the Mauritanian Sidr or the so-called Thai (Ziziphus mauritiuna), a variety that is not known locally. It was newly introduced to the country as it is characterized by its rapid growth, large leaves, few spines, density of flowering, abundance of nectar flowers, the quality of its fruits in its two (apple - olive) types in addition to its large size and distinctive taste, as well as its suitability to the desert climate.
This is according to what was confirmed to the al-Kafeel Network, by Engineer Ali Maz'al Layedh, Head of the Agricultural Affairs and Livestock Department of the Al-Kafeel Investments Company (one of the companies of the al-Abbas's (p) holy shrine).
He added: "The Sidr Model Farm is one of the agricultural projects adopted by the al-Abbas's (p) holy shrine, in its belief in the necessity of increasing green areas in the Karbala governorate, reducing the damage of desertification, and contributing to spreading the cultivation of some plants and introducing and settling some distinct varieties."
He explained: “The farm is built on an area estimated at (70 dunums), which is approximately (175,000) square meters, and it has been planted with more than (6000) sidr trees distributed into five sections, each section marked with one of the names of the five of As'hab al-Kisaa (peace be upon them). And, praise be to God, we have succeeded in cultivating rare and feasible varieties in line with the goal for which this farm was established."
And Layedh explained: “This farm was fenced to ensure its privacy with two vegetable deflectors, each belt consisting of a number of vegetative lines, which are a line of (local) Sidr, a line of olive trees with (230) trees, and a line of (eucalyptus) for each of the aforementioned sections, in addition to the (eucalyptus) line surrounding the farm as a whole with (2000) trees, with the planting of a line of 50 Levant thorns trees on the front side of the farm."
He pointed out that: "The farm adopts a special fertilization, control and nutrition program based on the products of Khair Al Joud Company for Modern Agriculture Technology, including environmentally friendly fertilizers and biocides, and the watering is done by a modern mechanism, which is drip irrigation."
