Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad closes Kufa and terrorizes its people and prevents them from supporting Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him)

On the fourth of Muharram in the year (61 AH), Ubaydullah Ibn Ziyad, the Wali of Kufa, delivered a violent sermon in which he threatened those who help and extend a helping hand to Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) with death and execution, as he read publicly the fatwa of Sharih the judge calling for the shedding of the blood of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him), and he ordered the closure of all roads leading to Kufa, in order to prevent the people of Kufa and the rest of the cities from supporting him (peace be upon him).

Terrorism and severe repression is the method practiced by Ibn Ziyad, for he followed the method of incitement and intimidation, so he incited those of weak souls by money and the chiefs of clans by promises of positions and leadership, and in return he oppressed those who were steadfast in their belief and arrested them and put them in prisons, and many of them participated, after being freed, in the Tawabeen movement represented Sulayman Ibn Surrad Al-Khuza'ie and his followers.

As for the loyal tribal leaders, he betrayed or imprisoned them. And we know that those who move people towards the right goal and bring them together are men of prestige and influence, and if they are absent, people will disintegrate, especially in a tribal society, the loyalty of people in it to the tribe and its leader. The loyalties of the chiefs of the tribes were divided between the Umayyads and the Alawites, so Ibn Ziyad sought help from those who followed him from among the heads of the tribes to eliminate those who disagreed with him.

Each tribe lost its leader and thus became weak and unable from taking the initiative and it was lost and dispersed. This is in addition to the threats, intimidation and terror employed by Ibn Ziyad's associates, the arrest of those who disagree with him, the infiltration of spies, and the monitoring of the entrances to Kufa and threating them by the Levant Army.
