Sayed al-Sistani receives the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq

The supreme religious authority received Sayed Ali al-Sistani, on Monday, the Special Envoy of the secretary-general of the United Nations in Iraq.

The text of the statement issued by His Eminence's office is as follows:

His Eminence Sayed al-Sistani received today afternoon His Excellency Dr. Mohammed al-Hassan, representative of the secretary-general of the United Nations and head of its mission in Iraq (UNAMI) and the accompanying delegation.

His eminence was given a brief explanation about the tasks of the international mission and the role it intends to play in the coming period. In turn, His Eminence welcomed the presence of the United Nations in Iraq and wished its mission success in carrying out its tasks. He pointed to the daunting challenges that Iraq is currently facing and the suffering of its people on multiple levels.

He said that Iraqis, particularly the elites, should learn from their past experiences, exert maximum efforts to overcome their failures, and work diligently toward creating a better future for their country where everyone can enjoy security, stability, progress, and prosperity.

Emphasizing that this cannot be achieved without devising scientific and practical plans to manage state affairs on the basis of competence and meritocracy, preventing foreign intervention in all forms, enforcing the rule of law, restricting weapons to state control, and fighting corruption at all levels. However, it seems that the Iraqis have a long way to go until they achieve this, may God help them.

And with regard to the inflamed situations in our region, His Eminence expressed his deep sorrow for the ongoing tragedy in Lebanon and Gaza and profound regret over the international community's and its institutions' failure to impose effective solutions to stop it, or at the very least, to protect civilians from the harsh aggressions perpetrated by the Israeli entity.
