The Hussaini mourning processions continue their various activities on the fourth day of the month of Muharram, to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam al-Hussayn and his family and companions (peace be upon them).
The streets of the holy city of Karbala witness the arrival of large crowds of mourners from various parts of Iraq and the world to participate in the mourning processions held in commemoration of the tragic event of Ashura.
The mourning processions, which start from various areas and neighbourhoods of the city of Karbala towards the shrine of Imam al-Hussayn and his brother Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon them), recite the Hussayni hymns and elegies.
Different segments of society participate in the marches, which are keen to commemorate the memory of this painful tragedy; embodying the principles of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) and his great sacrifices in the name of truth and justice.
The movement of the processions is organised according to a meticulous plan set by the Department of Rituals, Processions, and Hussainiyah Bodies, for the procession to move through designated streets, starting from the Bab al-Qibla of the shrine of Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him), passing through its holy courtyard, heading through the area between the two holy shrines, and concluding the mourning at the shrine of the Master of Martyrs, Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him).
The Rituals Department allocates a number of its staff to accompany each procession from the moment it starts, overseeing the march, preventing gatherings or overcrowding, and ensuring no intersection occurs between the processions and the visitors, according to previously defined routes.
