The Karbala mourning processions commemorated the fifth day of Muharram with mourning marches that traversed the streets of the holy city since the early hours of the morning.
The mourning processions during the first ten days of the month of Muharram are specific to the people of holy Karbala. This is a mourning tradition they have been keen on maintaining since ancient times, and it begins with the descent of the mourning processions of (Zinjeel).
The movement of the processions is conducted according to an organised plan set by the Department of Rituals, Processions, and Hussaini Bodies. Their route passes through specific streets leading to the Bab al-Qibla of the shrine of Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him), passing through its holy courtyard, then exiting through the Bab al-Imam al-Hassan (peace be upon him), concluding their mourning at the shrine of the Master of Martyrs; Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him), crossing the square between the two holy shrines.
The Rituals Department assigns teams from its staff to accompany each procession from the moment it starts until it concludes. They are responsible for organising the march, preventing gatherings or overcrowding, and following specific routes to ensure there is no intersection between one procession and another or with the visitors.
The departments of the Al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine mobilise their staff's efforts to provide the best services to visitors coming from inside and outside Iraq, to commemorate Ashura at the shrines of Imam al-Hussayn and his brother Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon them).
