On the evening of the fifth of Muharram... The Karbala processions continue their mourning activities

The Hussaini mourning processions continue their various activities on the evening of the fifth day of the month of Muharram, to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam al-Hussayn and his family and companions (peace be upon them) on Ashura.

The streets of the holy city of Karbala are witnessing the arrival of large numbers of mourners coming from all over Iraq and the world to participate in the mourning processions held to commemorate the painful tragedy of Ashura.

The mourning processions set off from various areas and neighbourhoods of the city of Karbala, heading towards the shrines of Imam al-Hussayn and his brother Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon them), reciting the hymns and elegies of al-Hussayn in expression of sorrow and loyalty.

The movement of the processions is organised according to a meticulous plan set by the Department of Rituals, Processions, and Hussaini Bodies. The processions will march through designated streets, starting from the Bab al-Qibla of the shrine of Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him), passing through its holy courtyard, proceeding through the area between the two holy shrines, and concluding the mourning at the shrine of the Master of Martyrs; Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him).

The Rituals Department allocates a number of its staff to accompany each procession from the moment it departs, overseeing the march, preventing gatherings or congestion, and ensuring that there is no intersection between the processions and the visitors, according to previously specified routes.
