The Karbala mourning processions commemorated the martyrdom of baby Abdullah son of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon them) on the ninth day of the month of Muharram, in the tragic event of Ashura.
The roads leading to the shrines of Imam al-Hussayn and his brother Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon them), the entrances to the old city, and the holy sanctuaries witnessed the arrival of the Hussaini processions to commemorate the painful tragedy, in an annual tradition that the mourning processions have been keen to uphold.
During the march of the mourning processions, the mourners' voices echoed with the injustice of Abdullah the baby of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon them) and his martyrdom on Ashura in the hands of his father (peace be upon him).
The mourning processions in the first ten days of the month of Muharram are dedicated to the people of Karbala, as the "Zinjeel" mourning processions emerge to commemorate the tragedy of the martyrdom of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) and to renew the pledge and loyalty to him (peace be upon him).
The holy shrines of Imam al-Hussayn and al-Abbas (peace be upon them) witness the arrival of large crowds of believers from inside and outside Iraq to participate in commemorating the Ashura anniversary. The voices of the mourners rise with Hussaini elegies that embody the meanings of mourning and loyalty to the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), their noble deeds, and their sublime teachings.
