The mourning procession began from the Al-Salam Bridge area, which is four kilometres away from the shrine of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him), passing through Al-Jumhuriya Street, and reaching the holy shrine of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him), crossing the area between the two holy shrines towards the shrine of his brother Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him), amidst significant security and service mobilisation to serve the visitors.
The voices of the mourners rose with chants expressing support for the cause of the Master of Martyrs, Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him), renewing the pledge to follow the principles of the eternal Hussaini uprising, and conveying its noble message to the entire world.
The mourning of the Twayreej Run is considered one of the largest peaceful human gatherings in the world. It is held annually with the participation of millions of visitors to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam al-Hussayn, his family (peace be upon them), and his companions in the tragic event of Karbala. The mourners chant the phrase "O Hussein... "O Hussein" to express support for the Imam (peace be upon him) and to respond to his call.
According to historical sources that spoke about the first time this great human mourning began, crowds from the town of Twayreej emerged on the night of the tenth of Muharram more than 130 years ago, after finishing the reading of the martyrdom anniversary in the house of Sayed Saleh Al-Qazwini, running through the alleys of the city calling: (O Hussein... "O Hussein" to express their support for the Imam (peace be upon him). Then, the ritual became organised in the following years, and later it was transferred to Karbala in an organised manner on the tenth day after performing the noon prayer at the Bridge of Peace, heading towards the two holy shrines.
The Al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine had previously announced the preparation of four gates for the entry of participants in the Twayreej March mourning ceremony, which are the Imam al-Hassan Gate, the Imam al-Hussayn Gate, the Imam al-Mahdi Gate, and the Imam Musa al-Kadhem Gate (peace be upon them); to alleviate the congestion occurring in the area between the two holy shrines, while the other five gates were designated for their exit.
The Al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine has prepared comprehensive plans with the participation of most of its departments to organise the entry and exit of mourners participating in the Twayreej Run, and to provide various services to them, with the aim of ensuring the safety and comfort of visitors during the commemoration of this occasion.
