A medical team at Al-Kafeel Super Speciality Hospital performed a delicate surgery between the ear and the brain to save a 26-year-old patient from Basra Governorate who was suffering from a chronic and severe infection.
Two medical teams participated in the operation; the first specialized in ENT surgery and the other in neurosurgery.
The ENT specialist at the hospital, Dr. Hisham Al-Mousawi, said, "The patient was suffering from a chronic and acute infection that affected the brain membrane, making her condition extremely critical. Thanks to the collective efforts and in collaboration with the neurosurgery team, we succeeded in saving the situation."
He added that "the procedure involved the removal of a chronic abscess that was about to cause a permanent loss of hearing bones, treatment of the mastoid process, and the creation of alternative auditory ossicles to replace those that had eroded due to inflammation, ensuring the restoration of the ear's vital functions," noting that the patient has passed the critical stage and is now in very good health.
