The venerable Lady Toktam (peace be upon her) speaking about the birth of her son Imam Ar-Reda (peace be upon him)

The venerable Lady Najma (peace be upon her) the mother of Imam Ali son of Musa Ar-Reda (peace be upon him), has other names such as: Toktam, Taherah, Arwa, Sakan Nubian and Summan.

It is narrated by Sheikh Saduq that Najma (peace be upon her) mother of Imam Ar-Reda (peace be upon him) has said: "When I got pregnant of my son Ali, I did not feel the weight of pregnancy, I could hear, while asleep, glorifications from my belly, which scared me, and once I wake up I do not hear anything anymore.

At the labor, he fell on the ground, putting his hand on the ground, raising his head to the sky, moving his lips as if he was speaking. Then his father Musa Ibn Ja'far (peace be upon him) came inside, and told me: "I congratulate you, Najma. It is a mark of nobility for you from your Lord!"

I gave him the infant in a white rag, he recited Adhan in his right ear and Iqamah in his left ear, and asked for the water of the Euphrates to perform Tahneek [doing a special massage on the baby's lower jaws] then gave him back to me and said: "Take it, for it is the rest (baqiyat) of Allah on His earth."

Lady Najma has given birth to her pure son Imam Ali ibn Musa Ar-Reda (Peace be upon him) on Friday in Medina, some historians state it was a Thursday eleventh of Rabi' Awwal in the year 153 AH, five years after the martyrdom of Imam As-Sadeq (peace be upon him), while other historians say it was on the year 151 AH.

It is narrated that when Lady Hameedah (peace be upon her), the mother of our Imam Musa Al-Kadhem (peace be upon her) purchased Lady Najma who was then a slave girl, she named her Toktam. This slave girl was very intelligent, religious and she also possessed highest level of decency and bashfulness in herself. She always used to accord highest degree of respect to her mistress. And once Lady Hameedah (peace be upon her) saw the Holy Prophet (Allah's prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) in her dream who instructed her to marry her son Musa (peace be upon him) to Najma and added: “She will soon give birth to a son, who will be the best of his time on the face of this earth”. And when Najma gave birth to Imam Ar-Reda (Peace be upon him) her husband Imam Musa Al-Kadhem (peace be upon him) gave her the name of Tahira; the immaculate.

Hisham ibn Ahmad has narrated that Imam Musa (peace be upon him) has asked him: Did you hear of anyone coming from Morocco?, I said: No. He (peace be upon him) said: There is a man who came from Morocco, let's go to him. We found him and he was in deed from Morocco selling slaves, and have introduced to the Imam nine girl slaves. Imam (peace be upon him) said: I do not need any of them. The Moroccan then said: I only have a sick slave girl, the Imam accepted her and bought her. The Moroccan then said to the Imam (peace be upon him): I will tell you then more about her, I have bought her from the extreme west of Morocco, and a religious woman from the people of the Book came to me and told me: Such girl should not be yours, as she is owned by the best man on earth, and soon after she will give birth to a boy who will be venerated in the east and west of earth. And in deed the prophecy of this woman happened, and the Imam Ali (peace be upon him) was born and the believers were coming in the house of Imam Al-Kadhem (peace be upon him) to congratulate him and share his joy for this great gift of heaven to the people of this blessed house, about whom the Almighty said: {Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity, O people of the [Prophet's] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification.} (33:33)
