The Marriage of Lady Fatima Az-Zahra and the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon both of them): A divine order.

The holy Prophet (prayers and Allah's peace be upon him and his holy Household) said: "If Ali was not created, there would be no equal for Fatima!"

All wishes of happiness to all on this great and happy occasion of the anniversary of marriage of the two lights that enlighten our existence, that of Imam Ali and Lady Fatima az-Zahra (peace be upon both of them), which coincides with the first of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah. So, congratulations to all of us for this blessed occasion.

The Messenger of Allah (prayers and Allah's peace be upon him and his holy Household) said to his daughter Fatima (peace be upon her): "O daughter, he who praises you, will be forgiven by Allah; Who will make him my companion where ever in Paradise I may be."

He (prayers and Allah's peace be upon him and his holy Household) also said: "Fatima is a piece of me, whosoever hurts her, he hurts me, and whatever makes her angry, makes me angry."

When Fatima (peace be upon her) grew youth, the great companions hurried to the Prophet (prayers and Allah's peace be upon him and his holy Household) one after the other so that he might honour them by marrying his pure daughter to them but the Prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) responded to none of them. From those who had asked the Prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) for his daughter’s hand was Abu Bakr and Umar whom the Prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) refused their request and said to both of them: ‘I am waiting, regarding her, for the Fate (of Allah).’

Sometime later, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) went to the Prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) hesitatingly because of shyness and asked for Lady Fatima's hand in marriage. Umm Salamah, one of the wives of the Prophet (prayers and Allah's peace be upon him), was present and she reports:

"The Prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) smiled, kept Imam Ali (peace be upon him) waiting, and went to his daughter and said, "you know how near Ali is to us and how dear he is to Islam. I have asked Allah to give you in marriage to the best of his creatures and the most beloved to Him. Ali has his wishes to marry you, what do you say?'

Lady Fatima (peace be upon her) did not reply but from her face the Prophet knew that she (peace be upon her) was happy about it.

The Prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) said, "Allahu Akbar. Her silence means her approval."

Then the Messenger of Allah (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) has ordered Anas Ibn Malek to gather the companions, to announce the news of the marriage of Fatima to Ali (peace be upon both of them). Therefore, the saint prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) told them: "The Almighty God has ordered me to marry Fatima daughter of Khadija to Ali son of Abi Taleb."

The prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) informed Ali that God commanded him to marry Fatima on four hundred weight of silver, and that was on the first day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah of the second year of migration.

This prophetic position that was linked to the divine will raises an important question: Why the Prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) said: "This matter of the marriage of Fatima, my daughter, is in the hands of Allah Himself, and He alone will select a spouse for her". Why couldn't he marry her unless the divine order comes?

The answer: There is obligatory a secret and divine wisdom associated to this marriage, on which depends all human relationship.

The fruits of this blessed and divine marriage is five children, who are the two infallible Imams our masters Imam al-Mujtaba and the Master of martyrs Abu Abdillah al-Hussayn (peace be upon both of them), and two girls that are Lady Zaynab and Lady Umm Kulthum (peace be upon both of them), all were born in the life of the Holy Prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) during nine years, and the last of their children was Al-Muhassen (peace be upon him) who were martyred few days after the martyrdom of the Messenger of Allah (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) due to hitting, beating and squeezing Lady Fatima (peace be upon her) between the door and the wall by the hypocrites and oppressors, while she was pregnant of al-Muhassen (peace be upon him) and few days after she (peace be upon her) died as martyr, succumbing to all kinds of oppression she had to face, after having lived nine years and (75 or 95 days) in the house of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him).
