Among those known by being the gate of the needs from the family of the infallible Imams (peace be upon them), is the venerable Lady Fatima Bint Huzam known by Oum al-Baneen, the mother of al-Abbas and his brothers (peace be upon them). She has gained this lofty position by her good faith in God and His Messenger, her extreme dedication, devotion and loyalty to the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them).
Oum al-Baneen (peace be upon her) was an example of the venerable and virtuous women knowing the right of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). She was eloquent, fluent, pious, and a model of asceticism, righteousness and worship. Lady Oum al-Baneen’s name was Fatima; however, upon her arrival in Imam Ali’s household, she requested that everyone call her Oum al-Baneen so that she would not remind them of the daughter of the Prophet and revive their grief. Despite being a young bride who undoubtedly had dreams and aspirations of her own, she instead insisted on being a mere servant to the orphans of Lady Fatima az-Zahra (peace be upon her). In turn, the children treated her with great respect and love, referring to her as their own mother.
She (peace be upon her) is the example of loyalty and faithfulness in its finest images, living with the Commander of the faithful (peace be upon him) in purity and sincerity, and after his martyrdom, she lived for a long time fulfilling her duty towards him.
Om al-Baneen (peace be upon her) was an example of the venerable and virtuous women knowing the right of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). Therefore, she educated her sons on the unconditional love and loyalty of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) and to be servants of their masters, ready to sacrifice and redeem them, considering this as a religious duty towards the beloved grandsons of the Messenger of Allah (Allah's prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household).
It is narrated that when Om al-Baneen (peace be upon her) first got the news of events that happened in Karbala, she inquired about Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him). Instead of answering her question about what had happened to Aba Abdillah, Bishr ibn Hadhlam told Om al-Baneen (peace be upon her) about the martyrdom of her son Jafar. Again, she inquired about what had happened to Aba Abdillah, to which Bishr replied, “May Allah accept the martyrdom of your son Abdullah.” Again Om al-Baneen (peace be upon her) inquired about the fate of al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) and again, Bishr replied saying, “May Allah accept the martyrdom of your son, Uthman.” Finally, she asked again about what had happened to her Imam, Bishr said, “May Allah accept the martyrdom of your beloved son al-Abbas.” At that time, it is said that a pain took over Om al-Baneen (peace be upon her) as she sat on the ground. And while looking at Bishr, she gathered herself and said, “May my offspring and all what is under the blue sky be sacrificed for Aba Abdullah al-Hussayn (peace be upon him). If Imam Hussayn is alive, the martyrdom of all my four sons does not matter.”
This venerable lady has a great position to the Almighty, His Prophet and Ahl al-Bayt (Allah's prayers be upon them), and whenever a person ask the Almighty for a thing by her right and intercession, his Dua is accepted and his request is fulfilled unless it is prohibited or is against the divine will. Therefore, people have a special love for her.
