The staff of the mirrors unit of the Department of Engineering Maintenance in the al-Abbas's (p) holy shrine designed beautiful artistic decoration and artwork to be a distinctive addition to the campaign of reconstruction and development witnessed by the holy shrine of Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him). This work is still ongoing in the project to change and restore the mirrors of the Holy Sanctuary, which features started being clearly visible.
In order to identify the stages of this project, the Al-Kafeel Network had a meeting with Mr. Hassan Said Mahdi, the head of the mirrors unit in the engineering maintenance department, who said: "We started this phase of work in the project by changing and maintaining mirrors of the shrine of the Master Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him) from the gate of Imam Mohammad al-Jawad (peace be upon him), as the work included removing the damaged mirrors and the building materials such as the plaster and the damaged bricks."
He added: "As a preliminary procedure, we have also strengthened the walls and arches with iron after molding it with gypsum, and injecting the site with special substances to strengthen the walls then we coated them with moisture insulating materials, to ensure the durability of work, and then we started the glazing work. Along with the work of mirrors, the division of electricity of our department replaced the existing lighting points to suit the new shape of mirrors."
He continued: "The work is still continuing until the process of replacement and maintenance of all mirrors of the holy sanctuary and shrine, taking into account the preservation of old designs."
As for the types and sizes of mirrors, he said: "During the work we used a kind of mirrors called (Taiwan), which are brought in the form of layers measuring (180 cm x 120 cm x 2 mm), which is one of the finest types in the Iraqi markets with consistent colors. "
It is worth mentioning that the unit of mirrors and inscriptions is concerned with the work of mirrors inside and outside the Holy Shrine, including the installation, the inscription and the maintenance with artistic methods by exclusively Iraqis, as it has its own workshop, to fill the need of the al-Abbas's (p) holy shrine permanently to prevent the need of external staff.
