The Supreme Religious Authority extended its condolences to the families of the victims of the ferry accident in Mosul, resulting the death of dozens of citizens. It also demanded that the reasons of the accident must be revealed and those responsible for this tragic incident must be held accountable, and it described the incident as part of the corruption system in the country.
These were the important points of the second sermon of the blessed Friday prayer of the 14th of Rajab 1440 AH corresponding to March 22, 2019, which was held in the holy shrine of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him), which was led by his eminence Sayed Ahmad al-Safi, in which he stated:
My brothers and sisters, I would like to extend our condolences to our families in Mosul, especially to the families of the victims of the tragic incident - the ferry which sank in the Tigris river in the city of Mosul - and at the same time we demand the disclosure of the circumstances and the accountability of those responsible for this tragic incident. Therefore, we will highlight the following two points:
The first: It is necessary to take responsibility in such large incidents by those in-charge ought to resign and be available to the investigative committee to find out the circumstances of the accident, and to bear the consequences of any shortcomings, as in many countries, resigning is a message through which an official expresses responsibility they fail to take, and not just an official that thinks of his personal interest and cling to his position, regardless of the circumstances.
The second: This sad accident indicates a tremendous imbalance in the administration system of the country and that the regulatory authorities are not doing their job. And this is a part of the corruption system in the country. Therefore, there is an urgent need to activate the supervisory role in various levels. Many regulatory authorities and supervisory committees are not doing what they are supposed to do – they either overlook the mistakes other officials in the government make, or remain silent by taking bribes; this is the main cause of such tragic accidents at all levels.
We then hope, brethren, that the officials feel their responsibilities and the imbalance in the government and consider fixing and treating it. We pray the Almighty Allah to keep away from our country all evil and all catastrophes, natural or tragedies, by the intercession of Mohammad and his holy family. And, the latest of our prayers is; praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, and Prayers and Allah's Peace be upon Mohammad and his pure and virtuous lineage.
