Seminars for a package of pilot projects organized by the Library and House of Manuscripts at the al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine in a number of universities.

The Library and House of Manuscripts at the al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine organized seminars in a number of universities; Basrah, Dhi Qar and al-Muthanna and other universities and institutions in the future, to show a package of pilot projects launched by it, and to indicate their usefulness and what will be achieved in the world of libraries, namely: The draft file project for the support of Iraqi authors, the project for the preservation of Iraqi scientific outputs, and the project of the Iraqi digital repository of university theses.

These seminars focused on three axes, each of them is on a specific project. Mr. Hasanein al-Musawi; head of the Indexing and Information Systems Center at the Library of the al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine explained some of the details of the project of the database of the Iraqi authors, indicating that this project is being implemented for the first time in Iraq, and is one of the most important tools that regulate and codify the names of the authors and their publications in the library catalogues. There was also a need for a reference list for Iraqi authors to provide an easy access to a unified name in libraries by providing a uniform list of names in a website. Also the database works as a link between different versions of authors' names through available references which facilitates the search and reduces the cost of setup and maintenance, saving time and effort, as well as it mentions the publications' titles of the Iraqi authors and determines their whereabouts in Iraqi libraries by providing a map of the geographical locations of Iraqi libraries.

As for Mr. Ammar Hussain from the electronic library unit, he talked about the project to preserve the Iraqi scientific output, indicating the importance of this project, which will ensure the preservation of knowledge publications, using modern mechanisms and methods to convert paper copies to electronic version. He also highlighted the strides made by the project.

Then, Engineer Ahmad Majeed, head of the e-library unit, talked about the project of the Iraqi digital repository for university theses, which is one of the important projects aiming to collect the university theses for the students of the higher studies and to classify them according to their specialization, within a database linked to a program that is an integrated digital repository, including the researchers’ theses to be a scientific and research reference for each students.

The university presidencies expressed their appreciation for such projects, as well as their willingness to cooperate with the Library and House of Manuscripts at the al-Abbas's (p) Holy Shrine, in order to perpetuate these projects for the benefit of all.
